Caribbean Shark Coalition
Conservation of Sharks and Rays in the Caribbean
Shark conservation is vital to preserving the Caribbean’s marine ecosystems, and the Caribbean Shark Coalition (CSC) is at the forefront of uniting regional efforts to protect these critical species. At SXM Divers, we are proud to partner with this innovative coalition, co-founded in 2020 by the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) and Beneath the Waves (BTW), to advance shark and ray research, policy, and conservation across the Caribbean. The CSC brings together experts, governments, and local stakeholders—including our team—to build capacity and foster collaboration, ensuring the long-term health of shark populations and the communities that depend on them.
Our hands-on involvement with the Caribbean Shark Coalition includes participating in fieldwork and training initiatives, such as the CSC’s first regional workshop in Sint Maarten in September 2022. Alongside partners like Nature Foundation Sint Maarten, our divers have learned to deploy Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) stations to monitor shark and ray populations non-invasively. We’ve also received training in safely tagging species like tiger sharks, Caribbean reef sharks, and nurse sharks, contributing to a regional database that tracks their movements and behaviors. This work supports the CSC’s mission to fill knowledge gaps and promote effective marine protected areas (MPAs) throughout the Caribbean.
Our collaboration with the CSC reflects our dedication to marine science and the future of Sint Maarten’s waters. By joining a network of over 45 members from 24 countries, we’re helping to scale conservation efforts that protect apex predators essential to reef health. From assisting with BRUV deployments to sharing our expertise as divers, SXM Divers ensures every dive contributes to a broader purpose. Join us to explore Sint Maarten’s underwater world and support a coalition that’s driving shark conservation across the Caribbean.
